In August of 2005 I was going through a very rough time in my life. I was at my lowest as far as I could remember. I was in my hometown of Penn Yan, NY. It was a Sunday afternoon and very hot. It was in the 90's.
I had just come from the grocery store - at the time, the only one in the town - and I had two plastic bags full of various things, many of them perishable, much like myself. The handles dug into my hands. I was waiting to walk across Main Street, which was totally deserted on a Sunday, and my despair caused me to say, quietly, to myself:
"God, please help me. I don't know what to do. Please, help me."
I walked across Main Street and started down a low incline of Clinton Street, between the Episcopal Church across the street on my right, and the Presbyterian Church's vast parking lot on my left. About 30 seconds later this small, blue car turned off from Main Street and abruptly came to a stop across the street from me. This was odd if only because it was a rural highway and parking was not permitted.
A man sprung out of the car and walked quickly toward me. He said the following:
"God just told me to pull over and pray with you."
