Beware: You may need to be committed for your own protection if you are fooled by pro-choice Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani's "Twelve Commitments."

Former Bronx Borough President Feranando Ferrer (the Bronx being one of New York City's five boroughs) analyzed Mr. Giuliani as follows:

"Rudy is all about opportunity and utility. I do not think he is a racist at all. In a way, he is something worse. A racist can't help himself. It's the way he is. But the opportunist can help himself, and chooses not to. The opportunist engages in discrimination or stereotyping out of a calculation that it is profitable in some way. There is some cynicism involved.

"It's all about power with Rudy. He only believes himself, not in any large ideas. His core value is loyalty to him. That's why he is always surrounded by the loyal group. Rudy will say anything, or do anything, to win, to get his way. There is no underlying belief system.

"Everyone's personality is an onion with many layers. I believe that opportunism is the core of Rudy's onion, after you peel away all the other layers."

Yes, give Mr. Giuliani his due: he announced noble goals (albeit without details) and twelve instead of ten. (The Ten Commitments would have been too similar to the Ten Commandments and reminded voters that Rudy has not done well with them. Still, the Twelve Commitments calls to mind the Twelve Apostles and when it comes to abortion, Mr. Giuliani stands out as the Judas among the twelve announced and unannounced Republican presidential hopefuls. Making him the 2008 Republican presidential candidate and head of the pro-life national political party would be absurd.)

The important question is which person should be trusted to fulfill commitments.

The answer is NOT Mr. Giuliani.

What a fiasco that would have been.

Moreover, I doubt that Mr. Giuliani WOULD appoint "strict constructionist" judges. His idea of a "strict constructionist" judge seems to be now federal appellate judge Debra Livingston. The proper role of a judge is to interpret the law and the Constitution — not to make up the law and deprive the people of the right to govern themselves. That's not something that Planned Parenthood's favorite Republican can be trusted to do.

Ronald Reagan said, "Trust, but verify," NOT "Look to the future and ignore the past."

In order to attain the kind of future we want, we must check "the rear view mirror." We need to learn from past mistakes in order to avoid repeating them. We need to place our trust in a person whom we can trust, based on demonstrated character.

Mr. Giuliani WAS a big improvement over his predecessor, Mayor David Dinkins, but that was not hard. To be sure, he did not coddle terrorists and criminals. But, he suffers from the same fundamental flaw of many prominent Democrats who were baptized and raised as Roman Catholics (examples: Senators Kerry, Kennedy and Durbin, House Minority Leader Pelosi): he has embraced abortion and homosexual acts as civil rights instead of wrongs. This is not only anathema to the Republican base in terms of policy, it betrays a deep misunderstanding of our Constitution that is shared by liberal judicial activists.
