Romney-Ryan should sieze the initiative on immigration and make a bold proposal to solve our immigration crisis.
After Obamacare, the economy, and federal deficits and debt, the immigration issue is high on the list of issues that must be addressed if our nation is to survive. Criminal immigration is not good for anyone. Clearly, there has been a political motive behind the lack of any meaningful, intelligent reform of the process that allows illegal immigrants to pour through our southern border with Mexico. This has got to stop.
Romney should consider offering a bold solution to the problem, something unlike any prior plan by either party.
Work with the Mexican government on a "win-win" solution.
Offer illegal immigrants who have jobs an opportunity to come forward and be granted work visas if their employers will vouch for their employment status.
To encourage them to participate in the program, offer amnesty to any employer who had hired illegal immigrants in the past.
Fast-track the process by simplifying the work visa process and reduce costs to nominal. The objective is to convert illegals to legals, control the immigration process once again, and provide an opportunity for employment and labor for both workers and businesses.
If immigrant workers desire to remain citizens of Mexico and stay in the US only for seasonal work, then develop an agreement whereby the US and Mexico share taxes on income.
If immigrant workers desire to become citizens of the USA, then provide a pathway to that process.
VIgorously protect our borders against further illegal immigration while providing an enhanced opportunity for those to enter the US on work visas, speeding and simplifying the process and making the cost to the applicant minimal.
Provide a listing service available to Mexicans for job opportunities under the work visa program.
Vigorously prosecute those who come to the US for the sole purpose of taking advantage of liberal benefit plans intended for US citizens in need of help. Return such illegals swiftly along with their family members if also illegally in the US. Children born in the US cannot become "anchor babies" for illegal parents. Parents entering illegally are criminals and the penalty must be deportation for the entire dependent family.
Withhold federal funds from any municipality, county, or state that encourages illegal immigration and refuses to cooperate with the INS.
Clearly, if there are jobs for illegal immigrants, those jobs are not being filled by US citizens. Therefore, there are jobs available for legal immigrants who would enter the US under this streamlined work visa program.
The objectives of this program would amount to a "win" for all concerned. Immigrants would not carry the stigma of being illegal, nor would they need to fear being deported. Municipalities would benefit from increased tax revenue and a more robust labor pool. Those with a work ethic would have an opportunity for citizenship. Those looking to simply mooch off the US welfare system (local, state, and federal) would be rooted out and deported, thus saving enormous sums and assuring there is sufficient aid for needy citizens. Border cooperation with Mexico would be restored.
It's time for a bold new immigration strategy and Mitt Romney is the one candidate equipped to foster an intelligent solution through the US Congress.
Bob Webster, a descendant of Daniel Webster's father and early American patriot, Ebenezer Webster, has always had a strong interest in early American history, our Constitution, U.S. politics, and law. Politically he is a constitutional republican with objectivist and libertarian roots. He has faith in the ultimate triumph of truth and reason over deception and emotion. He is a strong believer in our Constitution as written and views the abandonment of constitutional restraint by the regressive Progressive movement as a great danger to our Republic. His favorite novel is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and believes it should be required reading for every high school student so they can understand the dangers of tolerating the growth of unconstitutional crushingly powerful central government. He strongly believes, as our Constitution enshrines, that the interests of the individual should be held superior to the interests of the state.
A lifelong interest in meteorology and climatology spurred his strong interest in science. Bob earned his degree in Mathematics at Virginia Tech, graduating in 1964.
