The Good Guys Just Keep Winning

As I have written in a number of articles over the last several years, the good guys are winning in the democracies:  Mexico (July 2006); Canada (January 2006); Germany (September 2005.)  Now, less than twelve months after this change of governments in four nations very important to America from Leftist to conservative, the Swedish people have swept out the Leftist and anti-American Social Democrats with the worst defeat in the history of that political party.

As I have written in a number of articles over the last several years, the good guys are winning in the democracies:  Mexico (July 2006); Canada (January 2006); Germany (September 2005.)  Now, less than twelve months after this change of governments in four nations very important to America from Leftist to conservative, the Swedish people have swept the Leftist and anti-American Social Democrats with the worst defeat in the history of that political party.  In addition to driving Leftists from power, in the last two years pro-American conservative governments key to America have won general elections in Japan (September 2005), Britain (May 2005) and Australia (October 2004.)  The elections in Japan and Australia, key allies in the war on terror whose leaders and governing political parties both agree (unlike in Britain, where Tony Blair led a Labour Party opposed to fighting terror), were landslides.  What does all this mean?  Well, let us first consider just what it means for Sweden and America.

The new Swedish government is committed to reducing dependence on foreign oil by increasing supplies of domestic energy, in this case increasing nuclear energy production.  The new coalition government of Fredrik Reinfield will end the closure of nuclear power plants and allow some new power plants to be built.  Every step by democracies to become independent of the oil production of terrorists helps.

The new Swedish government will be deciding more supportive of America and its allies on the war on terror.  One of the four coalition parties in the new government actually supported America during the Vietnam War.  Two of the four coalition parties favor Sweden dropping its historical neutrality and joining NATO, which has troops fighting beside American troops in Afghanistan.

Sweden is the twentieth largest economy in the world.  One year ago those America and those nations firmly committed to our war on evil collectively had forty-four percent of the global GDP or about 20 trillion dollars.  Add those four nations which in the last year have elected conservative governments which are decidedly more pro-American and all these nations collectively have fifty-two percent of the global GDP or 22.5 trillion dollars.  This is a rough estimate the trend of elections and economic power, but despite being imprecise, it is significant.

More important is the trend of elections.  The number of important governments who have supported the French-German-Swedish anti-Americanism has dropped dramatically just in the last year.  Indeed, two of those three nations have voted in much more pro-American and pro-war on terror governments.  France, now almost alone in Europe, may be next.

That too may well change in a few months.  As I have written before, Nicholas Sakorsky, the devout Catholic immigrant to France, who is part Jewish and who has lived under Communism and who is pro-American, will probably be the next President of France.  That office has a plurality of political power in France and the shift in Europe if Sakorsky wins will be seismic.  Indeed, all of the major democracies in the traditional free democracies will be much more on our side than before the damn burst in the German general elections a year ago.

And that will not be the only good news to come.  The announcement by Tony Blair that he will resign has already led to vicious infighting within the Labour Party, whose approval rating in the polls now runs often behind the Conservative Party.  This may – and I predict that it will – force a general election after Blair leaves, which will – I also predict – lead to a Conservative Party victory.  That means that Britain will not only have a premier who is pro-American but a political party that is also behind America.

If the good guys win in the next year in French and British elections, then President Bush will be able to call a truly global summit of all the major free and affluent democracies and emerge from that summit with a very real wartime document stating our common goals and common unity. The political effect of such a document cannot be overstated.

We worry about whether democracy is taking hold or, if it is taking hold, if democracy is working in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan.  We should note that democracy is working in every sense among the free, affluent democracies.  Slow to anger, democracies aroused are implacable in mission.  Shhhh!  The good guys just keep on winning.
