An Unbook

Recall two years ago, as John Kerry began to emerge as the leading candidate for the Democrat nomination, that his 1972 book, The Winter Soldiers Investigations, vanished?  Kerry himself, who could have republished his book and gained free publicity, while making a bit of money, refused permission to republish the book.

Curiously, there were almost no copies of the used book for sale and those handful which were for sale were going for exorbitant rates.  Check online now and abebooks.com, the premier used bookseller, has precisely one copy for sale – and that for $75.00.  The Winter Soldiers Investigations became the Orwellian equivalent of an unperson.  It became, and remains, an unbook.

Several people have asked me about how I researched my new book, Sinisterism: Secular Religion of the Lie, and why no one has written about some of the topics before.  My answers:  it was not easy, and people have written about it before.  Their books, however, have vanished.  There are salient facts which it is simply too dangerous for the Left to let be known.  One such fact is that Nazis, Bolsheviks and Fascists were each just different murderous tribes of Leftists.

An even better example of how the Left turns published books into unbooks is a book  even harder to find and much less well known than The Winter Soldier Investigations.  Why?  The title of the book tells it all:  Russia and Italy Against Hitler: The Bolshevik-Fascist Rapprochement of the 1930s.  Fascists, odious creatures, and Bolsheviks, odious creatures, made common cause against Nazis, odious creatures, during much of the 1930s.

Now, this should be fascinating news to anyone who assumed that Fascists were the “Far Right” and the mortal enemies of Bolsheviks on the Left.  Certainly this book should provoke thought and discussion, particularly as we ponder how the enemies of peace, freedom and liberty seem to irrationally be making common cause, despite theoretical differences, against us.  It seems like a very valuable book.

But do not try to find this reference in your public library.  There are only two copies of the used book for sale at abebooks.com and the lowest price is a whopping $151.54!  The eBay bidding price is $179.20.  Is the price so high because it is an old book?  Hardly:  it was published in 1991.  In fact much older books by the same author sell for much less, even in the original edition.

Wow!  I bet the publisher of this book, Greenwood Press, is excited about how much money it could make by republishing a book which fetches so high a price as a new used book!  Well, not exactly.  The book is listed on the website as “Out of Stock,” and this 240 page hardcover book, which would normally sell for about twenty-five dollars can only be purchased new for $105.95.  Moreover, to even order a backorder copy of the book, Greenwood Press requires that you call them – it is specifically listed as “not currently available for purchase online.”

So perhaps Greenwood Press is ashamed of this book because its author is some quack.  That would explain its reluctance to publish a recently published book which now sells for a huge profit on the used book market.  What about the author, Joseph Calvitt Clarke?  Is he some vile nutcase?   No.  In fact, Judge Clarke was appointed to the federal bench by President Ford.  He presided over some of the most important legal cases of our times, including cases involving the CIA, and the salvage cases for the Lustitania and Titanic.

He comes from a long distinguished family of clergymen, jurists and professors.  His parents founded the Christian’s Children Fund, one of the most respected charities in the world.  He was a beloved and popular author long before he tackled the previously untouched subject of the relationship between Fascist Italy and the Soviet Union during the years from the rise of Hitler to Operation Barbarossa in June 1941.

The problem is the subject matter itself and the lies which it dispels.  If there is only a Left, and not a Right; if the Left craves power above all things; if these Leftists call themselves “Fascists” or “Bolsheviks” or “Nazis” or “Progressives” or “Baathists” or “al-Qaida;” if these common murderers and enslavers need the fig leaf of ideology to commit their crimes; if these things are true – as they are – then books like Russia and Italy Against Hitler: The Bolshevik-Fascist Rapprochement of the 1930s, is far too dangerous for anyone to read or own.
