More Random Thoughts.

Nothing special here. Just thinking out loud.

- I have to admit that even though I’m not a fan of MySpace, Texting, Twitter, or YouTube, they’ve sure proven useful in getting the news of what’s happening in Iran out to the rest of the world.

That they’re obviously an absolute pain in the backside of the mad mullahs trying to hang onto power in Iran is just an added benefit.

- There seems to be no denying the fact that one of the most basic impulses in humans everywhere is the one that makes us ask “Just who died and left you in charge of my life?”

Try as they might, despots and dictators will never beat that one out of us.

- History is a bit sketchy on countries that succeeded in doing away with their financial problems by simply printing whatever amount of money they thought they needed. This is why I keep thinking (worrying, actually) that, when this shell game we’re playing collapses, it’s not going to be pretty.

- I see where Chris Brown has pled guilty to beating his former girlfriend, Rihanna. For his oh-so-manly behavior, he’ll be sentenced to 5 years of probation, community service, and an order to stay at least 50 yards away from the young lady.

There was a time when abusing a woman got you instantly labeled as a piece of low-life, no-account trash. Once you acquired that label, it took a long time to shed it - if you ever could. I’m not at all sure that we’re better off as a society for letting that standard slip away.

Minor aside: I’d have tossed Mr. Brown’s sorry butt into jail but, then, I’m just a throwback to a time when punishment was actually worthy of the name.

- After 74 years, Kodak will no longer make Kodachrome film. It died at the hands of the digital camera. Looking around, one wonders how many other things are on life support in the digital age. Handwritten letters and fountain pens are already things of the past and you have to wonder if wristwatches can survive when cell phones can tell you the time and just about anything else you might want to know.

- I watched a recent news clip of Senator Barbara Boxer (D- Did I really say that?) getting a bit riled up when a brigadier general used the term “Ma’am” while addressing her during a committee hearing. She then asked him to address her as “senator” since she’d earned the title.

I think that it’s generally accepted that “Ma’am” and “Sir” fit into just about any situation requiring respect to be shown. Calling someone to task in front of an audience for a supposed slight involving the use of the term “Ma’am” says a lot about Senator Boxer. Not complimentary, I might add.

- Here’s why I’m not a cat person. I’m sitting in the living room and my dog “Monty” picks up a sock and brings it to me. This turns into about 15 minutes of throwing said sock all over the place and his being absolutely delighted in bringing it back to me. Occasionally, he’ll also grab one end and we’ll yank and tug and growl at each other until my wife tells us to knock it off so that she can watch the Mariners’ game.

I throw that same sock at our cat and the response I get is a look that says, “And just what am I supposed to do with this?”

- If you’re searching for people to look up to these days, I’d suggest checking out any small (or any size, for that matter) business owner.

Given the current economy, politicians looking for any and all ways into their pockets, rules constantly being imposed by bureaucrats who’ve never had to wake up in the middle of the night wondering (pick any or all of the following): “How am I going to: (a) Meet payroll; (b) Make that delivery; (c) Replace Joe/Mary/Frank/Kathy who are out sick; (d) Get that new part here to keep my machines running….etc”, one marvels at the fact that they’re still willing to do it.

Guts measured by the bucket load and a burning desire to make something they’ve built into a success is the only explanation for it.

Heroes - every one of them. And we’re really going to miss them if we succeed in turning business ownership into more of a headache than it’s worth.
