Important note: The above paper was originally prepared at the request of the American Physical Society (APS) for publication in their July 2008 newsletter, Physics and Society. Prior to its publication, the commissioning editor of Physics and Society referred it to a colleague who subjected it to a thorough and competent scientific review. Subsequent to publication in the July 2008 newsletter, Physics and Society, the paper was published online at the P&S website. However, within days of publication a statement appeared at the top of the web edition (in red) that both disgraces the APS and insults the paper's author.
